MIND YA, DON’T GET SICK!

12 artistic representations of the pandemy.

Visual Arts Group Exhibition at Bensousan Han
Artworks in this exhibition are trying to mark transitions, develop discursive possibilities and define a shared space of viewing. Taken together, these works of arts and crafts provide a glimpse of what we might learn from attending to the appearance of art in health settings, from adopting some of its techniques in their methodology, and from being sensitive to the intermediary role of art in the elucidation of meaning, the expression of suffering and the affirmation of collective experience.

The works adopt a variety of styles and cover a range of content, as might be expected from the different perspectives from which the artists are practicing their art. Linking the works are a number of specific issues concerning the place of art in living with illness and pandemy; the relationship of patients to medicine, its spaces and practices, to questions of narrative and the relationship of images to text, to questions of spectacle and what should be made properly visible.

Exposed yet piercing, the structural elements of Bensousan Han, a monument that eloquently narrates its own history, create a powerful setting. This power emanates from the charged decay and memory, the main components that would house such a testimonial exhibition. The main components that define a refuge as well as a cradle for the cultural activity, even in “numbed” times.
